Itinerary

Jun 16: The tour host will meet you in São Paulo Int’l Airport for the flight to Campo Grande. Arrival around mid-day and car transfer to our lodge. Lunch at a restaurant on the way. Afternoon exploring the easy forest trails of our lodge, looking for birds like Helmeted Manakin and Blue-crowned Motmot.

Jun 17 – 18: These two days will be devoted to getting the best possible shots of macaws in flight. There are two conveniently placed wooden terraces installed at the edge of the sinkhole, ideal spots for our photography as the macaws fly below us and at eye level. Expect dozens of great opportunities a day for flight shots. The habitat surrounding the sinkhole is good for birds such as Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Plush-crested Jays, among others. We stop for lunch and a siesta at a neighbour fazenda. This place also offers an optional fantastic side tour, which is to snorkel in the crystal clear waters of the Pantanal headwaters, full of fish and wornderful for underwater photos.

Jun 19: After breakfast we drive to our first lodge in the Pantanal. Here we are going to have our first experience with the biome, looking for varied birds and mammals by car or easy walks. In the evening we will look for the Ocelots, our main goal here.

Jun 20: A full day here and another night for the Ocelots. In the morning the feeders are often packed with different birds, including very tame Toco Toucans.

Jun 21: After breakfast we fly to Barranco Alto, about 20 minutes away into the heart of the Pantanal. This is a wonderful lodge with an immense area inland for our explorations with 4×4 vehicles or by boat on the river, which is pretty much a private river.

Jun 22 – 23: Two full days at Barranco Alto. Daily activities include safari drives, short walks and boat rides, always focused on producing the best photos. Wildlife often encountered here include Giant Anteater, Tapir, varied deer species, lots of parrots and macaws, Giant and Neotropical Otters, Caimans, Crab-eating Fox and many more. This is the most beautiful scenery in the Pantanal and great photos can be made here.

Jun 24: Morning photography and after lunch flight to Porto Jofre. Afternoon car drive to huge wetlands just north of our hotel along the Transpantaneira, where we will look for varied wildlife.

Jun 25 – 27: Three full days of boat outings for Jaguar and much more. Expect a lot of different Jaguar sightings, plus Giant Otters, Capybaras and lots of birds. We always return for lunch and a midday siesta before going out again in the afternoon.

Jun 28: One last morning boat outing and after lunch car drive along the Transpantaneira, stopping a lot for photography. Since we won’t catch a plane today we can have all the time we want here. There are loads of opportunities along the road. Night at a hotel in the city of Cuiabá.

Jun 29: Morning flight back to São Paulo Int’l. Check our optional short extension tour to the Atlantic Rainforest!

Extension Tour

Atlantic Rainforest

Finish your Brazil photo trip with a fantastic short extension 2 hours by car from São Paulo to the lush Atlantic Rainforest. We stay at a simple but fully devoted lodge for photography and birding. The feeders here are loaded with colorful birds, like Saffron and Spot-billed Toucanets, Red-breasted Toucan, Magpie, Red-necked and Green-headed Tanagers, Black-throated Grosbeak, Yellow-fronted and Blond-crested Woodpeckers, etc. Many hummingbirds are around as well, like Brazilian Ruby and Festive Coquette. Special forest hides allow us the opportunity to photograph more elusive species as well, like tinamous and wood-quails. Our visit also happens during the peak fruiting season of the Palmito trees, attracting a lot of rare and endangered birds right to the lodge gardens, like the Black-fronted Piping-Guan and the Red-ruffed Fruitcrow.

Mammals are seen sometimes too, like a tame Tayra that comes to the feeders and a few elusive Pacas at night, not to mention squirrels and monkeys.
